If anyone is interested in doing a casual mountain bike ride we will be at Navajo Lake Friday evening July 9th or Saturday morning July 10th. Let me know if anyone wants to tag along and we can decide how far we want to go and what time would work best.

I have a buddy coming to town late next week who is a very good mountain bike rider. I would like him to experience some of what southwestern UT has to offer. Is there anyone that could join us for a ride on Thursday, March 25 and/or Friday, March 26? The added bonus is that it should be offer a laugh or two as I demonstrate my lack of riding skills.

If no one is available, could someone offer some suggestions?

The RTC Las Vegas Century ride is scheduled for October 9, 2010. It has been a great event the last 2 years and I expect the same this year. I think this Century should again be treated as a “traditional” ride and given prominence on the Calendar.

Yep – I’m ready to dirty up my bike on Saturday and go for a road ride, too.

I also have Friday (Feb 5th) off if any one would like to do an EASY road ride in the middle of the day, weather pending. Give me word…

Tuesday, February 2: I rode the Gould’s Rim and found the lower section rideable with just a few soft spots. But from the corral on up is a muddy mess. I suspect the upper JEM is in the same shape.

showed up at Bloomingtons’ ManOwar park Sat. @10am. the only one. All alone, sniffled, called, no answers, got punk’d. Looked around, a couple of tri-guys showed up, introductions commenced, we got on with it, met some more tri-guys
could it be Bazaroworld! maybe these S.U.Tri-guys are nicer than the C.C.Bi-

Trail Update January 31, 2010: I rode both the barrel roll and rim runner trails in Santa Clara on Friday and they are in great condition. Rim runner is alittle more “wet”, but nothing sticks to the tires.

St. George Trail update 1/21/10. We’ve had 2 solid days of rain and none of the Green Valley/ Santa Clara Trails will be ridable for awhile. We rarely get rain like this. When I walked in my backyard, I sunk in about 8 inches, its that soggy. There has been no snow and the temps seem warm, so the paved trails are always an option. The Snow Canyon Parkway/Hwy 18 loop is a good one during weather like this. If anyone attempts Church Rocks, let us know the trail conditions. Thanks.

    January 14, 2010 at 10:39 am | #16

Some of us are heading back down to ride the great Santa Clara trails on Saturday(see the trail description on December 19th on the club calendar). We’ll ride Rim Runner first, then Sidewinder and Barrel Roll. The tentative meet time will be about 10:30 at the Barrel Roll trailhead, and 9:30 at the New Harmony Texaco where we can set up carpooling maybe. If you’d like to join us please respond here on the Impromptu section. You can also call John at 435-865-9648 Saturday morning for last minute info if you’d like.

Hi Steve: I’m planning on it. It looks like it’s supposed to be clear the next couple of days, including Saturday, so trail conditions should be good. I’ll meet you down there. Joe S. wanted to do a mtn bike ride too, so I’ll call him with the invite. I leave my computer at 3:30 on Friday, so would you or John please call me if there are any last minute changes. If anyone wants to share gas from Cedar, please call me at 531-9605.

On Saturday the 9th of January I rode the JEM trail and found favorable trail conditions, NO mud. The upper end has been very muddy, and is rutted in some areas but it is in satisfactory shape. Thanks to Stavros for his trail report a couple of weeks ago, it saved us from trying something that would cause resource damage. Tread lightly!!

Too bad I didn’t read Craig’s JEM conditions before I tried to ride it today…yes, it’s too muddy. I made it up as far as the rock quarry then got sunk in the muck…so I had to ride on the roads, they themselves were still quite wet, but packed down enough in most places to ride. So unless you like mountain biking on roads, choose race course, or Prospector…

Go to my comments in the “Scheduled Ride updates” to read about the trail conditions in St. George for the weekend of Dec 19, 2009

  19. cegerton
    December 16, 2009 at 10:15 am | #24

Consistent with Jeff and Steve’s notes, the snow is now gone from the JEM, but it’s still too muddy to ride the top. I tried it clockwise and counterclockwise, just for fun, but it was just as muddy from either approach!

    December 11, 2009 at 12:32 pm | #25

Just FYI: We tried to ride the Bear Claw Poppy trail Thursday, Dec 10th at around 3 pm. We parked at the trailhead near Navajo Drive in Bloomington. The first 1/4 mile of trail was packed and ridable, but beyong that, its pretty mushy. We turned around so we wouldn’t damage the trail. We saw one dude come out covered in mud, and his tires were “caked” in mud and wouldn’t turn anymore. He was carrying his bike! I’m sure he rutted the trail in the process :( . So we rode the dirt road near there, boring but ridable as it has a top bed of gravel. I just want mention the trail conditions here in St. George in case anyone is thinking of riding here this weekend. Church Rocks may be a better option??? -Jeff

      December 11, 2009 at 1:33 pm | #26

I rode the Hurricane Rim Thursday afternoon and almost all of my ride was on snow! 2-3″ of it. There’s snow everywhere right now, and it’s not just covering Goose and LC, but the JEM, Hurricane Rim, probably the Bench. I think the only Mt bike riding for the foreseeable future will be at Church Rocks. I think I’ll be doing quite a lot of road riding myself.

Hey – for the record – I had people suck my wheel, too!

    • Chanda Jeppson
      December 9, 2009 at 4:21 pm | #28

Yes you did! I must thank Brian for slowing enough to pick me up when I’d fall off your pace…so I wasn’t left in limbo…which usually caused a look back and slowing on your part so we could latch back on. So thank you too Lasse for facing that headwind most the way home and allowing me to tag along. I didn’t take one turn up front the whole way back (just hanging on for dear life). I know you mean well…tough love…tough love…most of the time I appreciate your tough love… ;)

I have to shout out to our VP and Little Steve M……….but for your draft, I never would have made it home on Saturday (5th). I would be a frozen carcass on the side of the road at Dammeron Valley. THANK YOU! I promise to get in better shape as to stop embarrassing myself :) You guys are the best! At least some people in this club will let you suck their wheel!

  23. Lassetassen
    December 7, 2009 at 10:33 am | #30

How come I get all the blame? If Brian would just learn not to stay so close, I wouldn’t be “provoked”. At any rate, I’m ever so grateful when people show up on a cold day. I have a sneaking feeling I would’ve turned back to go home if I was the lone person showing up. Let’s keep this up! (Next week is Mesquite!!!)

    December 5, 2009 at 9:32 pm | #31

had a great club ride with CCCC royalty today, the pres. wouldn’t ride with us but at least the VP would! It was cold on the Veyo loop but that was much nicer than the horrific headwind Bruce and I experienced last Sun. going up, got light head-
ed (with no beer [until we finished]). The locals were still talking about that wind at the Veyo station.

      December 6, 2009 at 10:30 am | #32

I don’t think Lasse is capable of riding with people. If you stay on his wheel he’ll keep picking up the pace until you drop off…then he may or may not come back for you. It was a great ride though. Thanks. Sorry we ended up zooming at the end. Lasse figured you had a good enough group & Bri was anxious to spell off his parents from babysitting so they could head back up to Logan. I didn’t want to be “lost in limbo” so I just hung on for dear life.

I rode the Red Cliffs/Church Rocks (Prospector) trail on Saturday (11/14) after the rain. It was firm but not wet with no loose sand. There were no post holes from horses so conditions were as good as this trail gets.

    • Jeffboomer
      November 17, 2009 at 5:01 pm | #38

I love this trail but have avoided it because the horses seem to ruin the trail. Good to hear its smoother again, I may go back.

  29. Jeffboomer
    November 13, 2009 at 9:38 pm | #39

Good news. The rain stopped about 11 am. I rode the Bear Claw Poppy/Stucki springs trail this evening. The rain got rid of the 2 inches of powder on the trail, yet the ground was firm. No dirt stuck to the tires or damaged the trail, so it looks like it will be a good weekend to ride in the St. George area if you get the chance. Happy riding!

Hey everyone, it’s Friday Morning, Nov 13th. I just want to make everyone aware that it is raining right now in St. George. The trails need it badly here, but you may want to think about where to ride over the weekend. I’ll leave another comment this afternoon for a weather update.

Unfortunately for me…I didn’t get out too ride yesterday, but man what a gorgeous day.

Lonnie, I like the idea of bringing back the Sunday AM ride. We had some very enjoyable rides when we used to meet at the Lighthouse coffee shop.

I’ll stay tuned to this feed.

I think this is a fine idea. I ride every Sunday anyway, and I’d like to join others for some of these rides. It seems to me the ‘Impromptu Rides’ comment section would be a great tool for setting up these rides.

I’m trying to get an email out to everybody, but just in case…We are doing the Veyo ride Saturday. Meet 9 am at Brian’s shop. It may be on the cool side, but nothing s-c-a-r-y or anything. We should be a good group as we have some of our St.George riders joining. Bloomington Park @ 10:00 or so. SteveM and I will be race leaders.

    • Chanda Jeppson
      October 29, 2009 at 5:02 pm | #52

A play on words (accusations) I’m sure.
Bri and I will be there for a change :) Colleen will be there, Matt Bracken and some tri club members…Jamie (new tri club pres.)
In other words…come out! There will be plenty of us to suffer with. (I’m wondering if my mommy butt will make it up that hill…it’s been that long…) Vicki? Shelley? Everyone…C’mon!

Well, Tim shouldn’t have a problem getting a ride leader sub for tonight’s ride with the waether all white and looming. Time to check out the booties, gloves and face masks. Brian’s got it all in stock, so… I have to work as usual, but did spend an hour on the trainer just to see if it worked. It did.

wouldn’t you know it…the Dr. wants me to have one more day of rest to my shoulder. leaning forward, going as fast as i do, would put to much stress on my fragile stitches. He wants me to hold off until Wed/Thurs…so sad…and such a LOVELY DAY OUT THERE!!!

It’s about time to start riding indoors…HIT.

It looks like it’s going to be a nice day at Little Creek this Saturday. A couple of us from New Harmony will be heading out at around 10:15 or so. We might have room for one or two other cyclist, although I’m not sure about this right now. If you would like to carpool, or just follow us if you haven’t been to LC before, reply here, or send me an email at steve@stevewalters.com.
