Does anyone know what happened to the ride calendar? When I click on the link it takes me to a strange page cccycling.org or something. I haven’t been on in a while, so I don’t know how long it’s been this way. Is there something I’m missing?

    THANKS!

We’re not sure what’s happened, but it seems the club’s domain name has been hijacked. We’ve just registered a new domain name for the club,( http://www.colorcountrycyclingclub.com) and made the necessary changes this afternoon. These changes will take a day or two to take affect and I’ll be updating the links then so hopefully the website and calendar will be back online by Friday.

Update: I just did the link updates and now the website and ride calendar appear to work again.

12/27/10 Even with all the rain we got last week, the Santa Clara Trails such as Barrel Roll, Rim Runner, etc. are rideable. There are “road closed” signs before the bridge to the trails, but people are entering anyway, not sure if you would get ticketed. I rode from my house, so the signs weren’t an issue for me (no windhshield at the trailhead for a cop to put a ticket on). I wouldn’t attempt bear claw poppy, the soil composition is different there.

For the club’s mountain bike riders, the ride on Saturday(9/25), Cassity/Thunder Mountain Trails loop, has been postponed until a later date.

Having just completed the cycling events at the Utah Summer Games I would like to recognize Tim Bonzo for what I consider to the ride of the Games for his effort in the Road Race. I was locked in tight race for the Omnium with Steve Moss—one point difference so whoever won the RR was going to win the “Golden Fleece”. Craig Egerton had graciously offered his services to me as a domestic. As the race developed I got caught on the inside when Steve made a move up the road. Craig hollered at me to make sure I saw the move. I responded that I was trapped and could not get out. Doug R. was beside and kindly let me out so I could get to Craig’s wheel. I got to his wheel and he took me smoothly across to Steve’s wheel. A few minutes later Steve dropped back and I assumed he wanted to keep an eye on me. After several rotations without Steve coming through I asked Craig to drop back and see if he saw Steve. Craig returned shortly and said there was no sign of him. At this point there was a break of 3 up the road and we were in a group of 6 and we started a nice rotation. The break was certainly within range but there was little incentive to close the gap when I was among friends who would take good care of me.
Perhaps it comes as no surprise to others who ride regularly with Tim B. but I was very impressed at his strength and skill. He was smooth in the rotation and never missed a turn. Shortly after the turn around Craig was dropped. I felt bad and was tempted to drop back for him, but knowing the time trialing skills of Steve Moss I didn’t want to take the risk. The rotation on the downhill run to Cedar City went smoothly. Once we turned the corner the sprint was on and I rolled in well off the back with my place assured.
I appreciate the efforts of those that provided assistance: Doug R., Tim B. and particularly Craig E. for sacrificing himself. I owe you.

Tonight’s TUESDAY night ride has been cancelled. Don’t forget there is the Wednesday night ride and Thursday night rides yet to come this week. Nikki and Lasse lead those rides and will be responsible for applicable news. BUT, with tonight’s chill being a bit too chilly, our ride has been cancelled.

I’ll hope for warmer weather NEXT Tuesday.

Tues, Fed 16th. All the St. George & Santa Clara trails are ridable and in great shape including the Stucki Springs/Bear Claw Poppy trail. Don’t dress too warm.

Feb 4th Trail update: I rode the Green Valley trails today (Bear Claw Poppy, Stucki Springs). I started from the trailhead off of Navajo Drive and worked my way up. The trails are ridable :) but sticky in some places. I did venture off on a lesser used shortcut and mud started flying, so you may want to stick to the main trails. ATV & motorcycles have been in the soft mud on these trails (illegally)so you’ll notice some damage :(

Thursday, Feb 4: I rode Prospector (Red Cliffs/Church Rocks) today and encountered a dry trail. It looked like the 5th cavalry passed through in places but a few dozen bicycles will heal the damage the horses did and all will be well. See this actual picture taken on the Red Cliffs trail: http://www.tnmilitary.org/MainPages/History/Cavalry%20in%20Knoxville%20ca.%201898%20200-111-038.jpg

Tuesday, February 2: I rode the Gould’s Rim and found the lower section rideable with just a few soft spots. But from the corral on up is a muddy mess. I suspect the upper JEM is in the same shape.

On December 28th I rode from the parking lot at Sheep Bridge road up along the Hurricane Rim to the Restroom/Hurricane Canal Trail crossing. This is the trail crossing by the restroom that drops down into the canyon. I then took the road up to where the trail crosses the main trail then back down to the parking lot at Sheep Bridge. Good trail conditions, only a couple of damp spots with no heavy mud. This section of the system is OK to ride. Based on John’s account of this system to the South, conditions are unsuitable for riding. We began our ride about 2:30 in the afternoon, windy and a bit cold, but it beats a day in the office!!

I appreciate John posting his ride on the JEM, it helped me modify my ride and to be aware that trail conditions may not be suitable, thanks John RR

December 27: I rode JEM today and it was still muddy on much of the trail. From the Sheep Bridge trail head, it is fine (mostly) until you cross the double road 3 miles in and turn left to climb up to the top. As soon as you cross the main Sheep Bridge Road and start up the wash, it turns very gooey. My tires looked like Surly Pugsley tires in about 3 revolutions. After cleaning my bike enough to ride it, I backtracked to the trail and headed on up the JEM counter-clockwise. This was fine until I got to the section just below the main road where it quickly became irresponsible to continue.

I rode down the Chinatown Wash trail which was fine down to the big wash. On my return to the Sheep Bridge trail head, I turned up the Hurricane Rim and rode on dry soil until the first big wash crossing. From there on, it was a mess again so once again, I turned back.

Also, I started pretty early in the morning while the surface was cold and hard. In the hour or so I was out, things softened up quite a bit and sections that were firm and damp on the way out were borderline gooey on the way back.

Bottom line: JEM is not ready for prime time yet.

The good news: I rode the Santa Clara trails on Saturday with my visiting brother and had a great day. The soil was dry but not dusty — perfect. (Chanda and Brian, we still need to get you guys out there. Pick a time and I’ll go.) JS
