The Rainbow Rim Club Trip August 19th-20th

The club’s semi annual mountain biking trip to the north rim of the Grand Canyon is coming up in a couple of weeks(August 19-20). The Rainbow Rim trail runs along the North Rim of the Grand Canyon just outside of the national park. The ride is 18 miles out and 18 miles back if you want to do the whole enchilada, but it lends itself well to taking on shorter sections at a time. There are a couple of little 400’ climbs — nothing too hard. This trail has all the right combinations of superb design and use of topography, good surface, solitude, ponderosas, wildlife, and gorgeous vistas that make it a “must do” ride.
The plan is to do the 3-hour drive to the North Rim Friday afternoon. We’ll camp at North Timp(primitive; no water or facilities), and then begin the ride at around 10 AM. This gives people who are unable to camp time to drive out Saturday morning. Call John Stavros at (435) 590-1158 for more details and to get directions

The shortest route is on hwy 22 which begins on hwy 89 about 1.5 miles east of Fredonia. This is not a well marked road so keep an eye out. It’s paved for a while but then turns to gravel. After about 40 miles or so, turn onto FR 206. From the junction of FDR 206 and 271, follow FDR 271 for 5 miles to FDR 271A, turn right and follow FDR 271A for 3 miles.

Camping is primitive with no facilities of any kind. Bring everything you need.
